Arctic Survival Challenge -The Facts at your Fingertips!

What, where and when?

A week in March 2011 spent in the stunning and pristine wilderness near Ostersund, Sweden, 150 km south of the Arctic Circle. You will spent your time building a timber shelter to live in, digging and sleeping in an ice hole and catching fish, as well as husky driving and snowmobiling. It is a once in a lifetime experience which challenges your survival instincts, but also provides complete tranquility and relaxation under the Arctic stars!

How long is it?

8 days (7 nights) spent in Sweden.

Who can do it?

You must be at least 18 years of age.

What company are we doing this with?

A company called Intrepid Expeditions - take a look at their website, at http://www.intrepid-expeditions.co.uk/. They run trips all over the place – the Arctic Survival Challenge is just one of them!

How much is it?

You pay a non-refundable deposit of £200.
You then raise sponsorship for £2,300
On top of this you will have to buy travel insurance incl use of snow mobiles…approx £10 and appropriate cold weather clothing – see kit list

Do I fundraise all of it?

Yes! But there are loads of great ways to do fundraising, and we can do lots of activities together. It seems like a massive amount of money to raise when it actually isn’t as bad as it looks!

What is included in that fundraising price?

All flights, transport within Sweden, accommodation and food, skis, huskies, ice fishing equipment, snowmobiles (one between two unless arranged otherwise), full driving licence or motorbike licence required.

What is not included in the fundraising price?

Personal travel insurance, personal expenditure, all other items not mentioned in the programme.

What about my health?

If you have a medical condition, you should seek advice from your doctor. This information must in turn be added to the medical form and a member of Intrepid Expeditions must be informed. If in doubt participants should contact staff of Intrepid Expeditions to discuss the requirements. Participants should have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), and should also be aware that medical assistance is rarely available in the remoter regions visited.

What about my fitness?

Whilst you don’t have to be the definition of fitness, a good degree of fitness will help you enjoy the trip more.

What preparation do we get?

Pre survival training weekend in Devon: Friday to Sunday (November) in preparation for the expedition in Sweden. Activities include shelter building, fire lighting, water purification, navigation, cold weather injuries, food preparation and equipment needed for Sweden.

Do we get a guide?

Yes; there will always be experts with us to show us what to do and help us out.

Do I need anything in the way of vaccinations?

Tetanus is recommended

Why should I do it?

Because it’s fantastic! It really is a once in a lifetime thing – take the chance whilst you can! You’re raising money for charity, having a great week in Northern Sweden, and learning life skills; what more could you want?!
